About the Event
Victoria & Abdul (2017) is a true story based on the real-life friendship between Queen Victoria and her Indian servant, Abdul Karim. It is adapted from Shrabani Basu’s book of the same name, documenting how Karim became a close confidant and "Munshi" (teacher) to the Queen in her later years, despite intense opposition from her household.
Key Historical Details
The Meeting: Abdul Karim was selected to serve at Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887 and quickly rose from waiter to becoming a close advisor.
The "Munshi": Karim taught the Queen Urdu and educated her on Indian culture, a role that brought them very close
